yellow-orange cheeks

my ode to mangoes, my favorite fruit, which reminds me always of my country, the Philippines!

yellow-orange cheeks
flayed from a seed,
how easily your flesh
turn to nectar once
i squeeze and extract
your beauty, your essence
i drink like wine—
so suddenly, inebriated
from your sweetness…
i breathe in your scent
and the tingle of your
effervescence, strangely,
returns me to Cebu where
abundant mangoes dangle
from trees; and even
if i am told not
to pluck or eat from
your forbidden tree,
i disobey only to come
back again and again—
my home, my country,
my Philippines
